PUNE: Virologists at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune have warned that multiple stereotypes of the dengue virus are behind the rise in dengue cases in many parts of the country, particularly north India.
"All the four closely-related dengue-causing viruses (DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4) are circulating in the air, adding to the complexity of the disease,"NIV director Dr A C Mishra told TOI.
He said that with all the four stereotypes, there is an intensity in the number of cases. While there could be an increase in the vector population, Mishra said lack of effective control measures could be leading to increase in dengue cases.
Notwithstanding the increase in the number of dengue cases in north India, the situation in Pune is under control, a senior official from the PMC health department said.
PMC deputy health officer Dr Dhananjay Chandakkar said the city has witnessed relatively less dengue cases this year compared to previous years.
He said it has still not been confirmed as to whether 22-year-old Nitesh Devendra’s death at a private hospital last Saturday was dengue-related.
